We are developing quantum sensors based on Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) centers—atomic defects in diamond that act as ultra-sensitive magnetometers. These magnetometers can also be used to optically detect microscale Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (micro-NMR). To detect weak magnetic NMR signals from nanoscale samples, however, we must move beyond the flat NV diamond. By nanostructuring the diamond surface, we enhance the magnetic sensitivity of NV centers, enabling the detection of microscopic sample quantities that are invisible to standard sensors.
Applicant will investigate how the diamond surface affects the quantum properties of NV centers which are buried several nanometers below the surface. Further, we will develop recipes using Electron-Beam Lithography and Reactive Ion Etching (RIE) to sculpt the diamond into functional nanostructures. All these activities lead to the goal to develop a diamond chip that demonstrates superior sensitivity.
