Hi, my name is Karla and I’m in the second year of my Master’s studies in the Nuclear and Particle Physics programme at Jaderka. Currently, however, I’m taking a year out at CERN, where I’m working as a technical student.
- Why did I choose Jaderka?
Ever since I was a child, I’ve been drawn to mathematics and physics, so the choice was clear—either Jaderka or "Matfyz" (FMP at Charles University). Originally, I wanted to avoid Jaderka because it seemed too technical, and I was attracted to the idea of studying theoretical physics. However, after attending several Open Days and other events, I realised that in terms of physics programmes, the two faculties are actually very similar. What ultimately swayed me was the friendlier environment at Jaderka and its excellent technical facilities, such as the tokamak. I also really value the individual approach to students, which is truly exceptional here.
- Would I recommend Jaderka? And who is it not for?
I would definitely recommend Jaderka to anyone who enjoys mathematics, physics, chemistry, informatics, or other technical fields. It’s a place where you can find your own path among a vast number of fascinating specialisations. If you have enough diligence and determination, you can get a huge amount out of your studies. On the other hand, Jaderka is still a demanding school. If you aren’t prepared to dedicate a significant portion of your time to your studies, the road to graduation can become quite difficult.
- What do I enjoy about the faculty and what it there to do at Jaderka?
I enjoy my programme—Nuclear and Particle Physics—the most, along with the opportunities the faculty has given me, such as the internship at CERN or a summer school in Lithuania. But what I truly love is the atmosphere at Jaderka. We all know each other; we support one another and share not only the "suffering" of the exam period but our everyday experiences too. At Jaderka, you can focus on a wide range of topics—from researching dark matter and simulating blood flow in the heart to managing a nuclear power station. Even though I don’t focus on those specific areas, it’s fascinating to hear about them from friends or during engaging lectures.
- What do I do outside of Jaderka?
Outside of university, I have the most fun with the La Tralalalala football team. A group of us girls meet up several times a week to get some exercise after long days in the classroom. I also love playing the piano, and whenever I have a moment of free time, I love to travel.
- What is student life like at Jaderka?
Student life here is really vibrant. Thanks to our student societies, there’s a great event at least once a week—pub quizzes, pizza parties, and more. And if you join one of our sports teams, you certainly won’t be bored, as we tend to put more effort into our performance in the pub than on the pitch! :-)
