PEOPLE OF JADERKA: Štěpán Hortlík

“I was very good at physics, mathematics and chemistry at secondary school. I wanted to combine all three in my studies. At the same time, I knew I was looking for a personal, close-knit atmosphere; I simply value an individual approach. Jaderka ticked all those boxes. The first two years were tough, but since starting my Bachelor’s thesis, I’ve been working on research that I find interesting and meaningful,” says Štěpán. Alongside his excellent results at the FNSPE Department of Materials, he manages to captain the football team FC Jaderný odpad (Nuclear Waste), while also having completed his studies in classical singing at the Pardubice Conservatory. • Why did you enrol at Jaderka?

I knew I had what it takes, having won multiple regional rounds of the mathematics, physics and chemistry Olympiads. The faculty also promised a close-knit atmosphere and an individual approach, which was exactly what I was looking for. Moreover, I could study a programme that combined all the subjects I enjoyed at school—Materials Engineering.

  • Would you recommend Jaderka? Who do you think it is not for?

For people like me, it is definitely one of the best universities you can choose. The examination style and the approach to research really suit me, but it does require a lot of time. I would say Jaderka isn't for those who need to work alongside their studies. You have to expect the course to take up five days a week, and sometimes even part of the weekend.

  • What do you enjoy about the faculty and what is there to do here?

A very positive discovery after starting at Jaderka was how closely connected the students and lecturers are. It really improves the atmosphere, and we students often get involved in actual research even before our Bachelor’s thesis.

  • Do you have any interests outside of Jaderka?

Fortunately, I’ve kept up my hobbies during my studies. During my first two years, I finished my classical singing studies at the conservatory in Pardubice. However, because I have to do so much thinking here, I now prefer sport to singing. I cycle a lot, and I’m really glad that during the winter exam period, I always manage to get about three weeks of skiing in. I’ve also grown fond of the physical education events organised for the whole of CTU; thanks to them, I’ve learned rock climbing, windsurfing and even ski touring.

  • What is student life like at FNSPE?

Student life at Jaderka takes many forms. It can be an entire evening of studying together, whether in a study room or at the pub. What I like most, though, is our football team, FC Jaderný odpad. I never knew how to play football—I was always the last choice in PE classes—but I’ve finally found a team that matches my skill level. Our matches have a fantastic atmosphere. The highlight is our traditional derby against Kriplovy hoši, which we stream live on YouTube.
