UK Delegation Led by Minister Peter Kyle Visits FNSPE CTU

It was our honor to welcome a distinguished foreign delegation, led by Peter Kyle, the UK's Secretary of State for Business and Trade, to our experimental reactors VR-1 and VR-2. The delegation was accompanied by the British Ambassador to the Czech Republic, Matt Field. During the visit, meetings were held with the Rector of Czech Technical University in Prague, Michal Pěchouček, and the faculty leadership headed by Dean Václav Čuba.

The discussions focused primarily on developing scientific and technological cooperation. Ensuring the safety of nuclear and artificial intelligence research is one of CTU's highest priorities and an integral part of our teaching and research. At the same time, this presents an opportunity for an inspiring Czech-British partnership between technical universities.

The delegation’s visit followed shortly after the signing of an important agreement on the development of small modular reactors (SMRs) between Group ČEZ and Rolls-Royce SMR. The signing was also attended by the Czech Minister of Industry and Trade, Karel Havlíček, and the Governor of the South Bohemian Region, Martin Kuba.

The first modular reactor in the Czech Republic is planned to be built at Temelín Nuclear Power Station. ČEZ Group plans to develop SMRs with a total capacity of up to three gigawatts by 2050. The existing nuclear power plants Dukovany Nuclear Power Station and Temelín Nuclear Power Station each currently have a capacity of approximately two gigawatts.

Experts from the FNSPE CTU in Prague have long been engaged in SMR-related research, and an annual conference dedicated to this field is regularly held at the faculty.

We are looking forward to continued dialogue and collaboration.
