This topic will be led by Dr. Stefano Marchioni from IPP CAS (marchioni [at] ipp [dot] cas [dot] cz (marchioni[at]ipp[dot]cas[dot]cz)) - good level of English is necessary.
A full database analysis of the vertical instability growth rate and ideal instability margin will be conducted using the existing database of simulated discharges of the COMPASS Upgrade tokamak.
The student will start by learning the physics of plasma vertical instability in tokamaks and how to compute it using the codes available at the Institute of Plasma Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences. The analysis will aim to correlate vertical instability with plasma shaping parameters and plasma profile parameters, and to develop a simple model that parameterizes the dependence of vertical instability on these factors.
The scope of the thesis can be adapted to both Bachelor and Master level students.
