Course characteristics

The master´s degree course in Mathematical Engineering is multi-disciplinary in character. It is oriented towards advanced sections of modern applied mathematics. Graduates are competent at using the knowledge acquired – supported by modern computer technology - in natural sciences and in current practice in engineering.

The courses are devoted to in-depth study of modern applied mathematics and provide significant insight into its state-of-the-art. Part of the degree course also includes an individual student project on a given topic. The project furnishes the student with a firm grasp of the field and often offers original results publishable in scientific journals.

Students can extend their professional horizon to disciplines substantial for the development of mathematical models in numerous fields of science and engineering, environmental protection or biology, and to their use in advanced computer technology.

Graduate's profile

Knowledge: The graduates acquire a thorough knowledge of advanced mathematical, physical, and computational disciplines, which can be further extended, according to their specialisation, by courses in applied mathematics or engineering computational science.

Skills: The graduates have the capability to use methods and techniques of selected areas of applied mathematics and physics in solving real-life engineering, research, and scientific problems. In addition to the specialised skills gained during the course, graduates also possess other skills, e.g. adaptability, a quick grasp of unfamiliar interdisciplinary problems, and problem analysis and its corresponding computer processing and synthesis. Good writing skills also make up part of the graduate´s profile. A sense of responsibility in performing tasks and in decision making is a matter of course.

Competency: Positions for the graduates are open mainly in industry, research, and the private sector, and their capabilities to use highly analytical methods of work and a systemic approach to solving problems with modern information technologies are highly appreciated. Such positions are mainly in the institutes of the Czech Academy of Sciences, in research and development centres of large enterprises, or other research institutes. Professional competence also makes the graduates excellent candidates for leading managerial positions.
