Teaching
Students acquire knowledge in fundamental physical, mathematical, and informatics disciplines, which is further developed in the fields of nuclear technology, nuclear power, and radiation protection. Through their choice of optional courses, students can further specialise during their bachelor’s studies in either nuclear power practice or theory, which provides a solid foundation for subsequent master’s studies. Over the course of their studies, students gain broader knowledge in advanced disciplines such as neutron physics and thermohydraulics, with a focus on the theory, design, and operation of nuclear reactors. In addition, students are introduced to practical engineering aspects of the design and operation of nuclear facilities. At the department, theoretical teaching is complemented by experimental instruction in laboratories and at the school reactor VR-1.

Science and research
The department’s scientific activity is focused on a broad spectrum of issues in the field of nuclear power. It is engaged in theoretical and experimental reactor physics, the safety of nuclear installations, and computational tools for nuclear reactor analysis. The department also conducts research on advanced nuclear reactors, nuclear fuel cycles, and spent fuel. Design and testing of nuclear reactor control and safety systems are carried out here. In addition, the department studies reactor thermohydraulics and the thermomechanics of nuclear fuel.
Furthermore, the department operates and manages the faculty’s nuclear reactor VR-1. In addition to the department’s core students, students from approximately twelve other faculties, as well as an ever-growing number of secondary schools from across the Czech Republic (through excursions and operational demonstrations), participate in teaching at the reactor. The reactor also enables close collaboration with foreign institutions specialising in nuclear reactors and reactor physics.
