Study programs
FNSPE CTU in Prague offers applicants a three-year Bachelor's degree programme, which can be completed in full-time study, i.e. the student attends lectures, exercises and seminars throughout the week. In addition, from the second year onwards, students are involved in research teams.
In the first two years, a number of courses have a common basis in mathematics, physics, computer science and languages. It is thus possible to change the initial selection if there is interest and if some of the minimum requirements for the direction are met. This gives students more time to get acquainted with the study options at FNSPE and to better choose their next direction.
What the applicant must fulfil:
- The basic requirement for studying is passing the matriculation exam or a certificate recognizable as a matriculation exam.
- Successful completion of the admission procedure or its waiver on the basis of previously declared rules.
- The student must be able to study in the Czech language, which can be proven by a matriculation exam in Czech or Slovak, or a B2 level certificate. If for some reason applicants do not have a certificate, they will not sit the Czech language entrance exam.
Information for applicants from Russia and Belarus: Applicants will be admitted to study (if approved by the Rector of CTU) provided that they do not apply to a critical study programme and provide a motivation letter.
After obtaining the prescribed number of credits (180), completing all prescribed courses, submitting and defending the Bachelor's thesis and successfully passing the state final examination, the graduate is awarded the degree of Bachelor (B.Sc.) and is solemnly graduated in Bethlehem Chapel. Afterwards, the graduate has the option of continuing his/her Master's studies (see Master's studies) or going into practice.
The Faculty has successfully updated its accreditation of the Master Programme. It is a full-time programme extending for 2 years (4 semesters). The students are expected to attend lectures, practicals, and seminars throughout the semester. The tuition fee for Master Continuation programmes taught in English is 132 000 CZK per academic year (66 000 CZK per semester).
Candidates for the degree programme are required to pass an entrance examination, following which they can choose an accredited degree course, which can often be an extension of the undergraduate programme (see Bachelor Programme).
The Master Programme offers:
Interesting lectures by professionals from the Czech Republic and abroad.
Participation in scientific teams after admission to the programme.
Accredited supervisors.
Long-term study stays and internships at partner universities and international research centres.
Upon attainment of the required number of credits (120), successful completion of coursework in all courses, submission and defence of the Master's Thesis, and successful passage of the State Final Examination, the student is awarded a Master's Degree (Mgr., the title of Ing. in Czech) at a graduation ceremony in the Bethlehem Chapel. This is a prerequisite for entering the Doctoral Programme or pursuing employment or a career in e.g. research. Many graduates start their careers in the ČEZ Group (ČEZ), Proton Therapy Centre Czech, ELI Centre, IBM, banks, or hospitals.
The Doctoral Programme (also referred to as Ph.D. Programme or Ph.D. Course) is open to graduates holding a Master's Degree who want to extend their scholarly qualification in a relevant field of study.
The research-oriented programme provides in-depth training for a high level of professional competence in the chosen area (see Fields of Doctoral Programme) and the ability to develop and use independently the professional knowledge and skills gained in research. The candidate for admission must have completed a relevant Master Programme (or Continuation Master Programme) and successfully passed an examination in mathematics, physics, or chemistry (as appropriate), in courses related to the elected branch of study/specialisation and in the English language.
The full-time programme includes lectures and seminars and self-study of literature. However, the most essential part of the programme is based on research under the guidance of a supervisor and preparation of the dissertation (also referred to as doctoral thesis).
In the dissertation, students usually address a specific scientific problem within one of the research groups or teams at the Faculty or collaborating institution. The dissertation must demonstrate the doctoral student´s capacity for independent thought and be based on scientific scholarly research results already published or demonstrably accepted for publication in an influential journal relevant to the area of research. The programme is completed with the defence of the contents and conclusions of the dissertation at the final oral examination. The State Doctoral programme is also offered as part-time, i.e. in a five-year combined form with a possible extension to six years. Students usually cooperate closely with the institution they are affiliated with. The degree conferred on the student is Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy).
There are Ph.D. scholarships available to students studying in English. For conditions, eligibility criteria and details of the selection procedure see the Dean's directive FJFI_PD_2024_10_V01.
