Doctoral studies build on the successful completion of a Master’s program in the relevant field. Their aim is to deepen theoretical knowledge and to develop the ability to conduct independent scientific research within the chosen discipline.
Admission requires the completion of a Master’s (or follow-up Master’s) programme in the corresponding or a related field, as well as successful completion of the entrance examination. The examination covers mathematics, physics, or chemistry (depending on the chosen specialization, see Doctoral study programmes), the specific subjects of the intended specialization, and English.
General Information about Doctoral Degree Programmes
Doctoral studies at the Faculty of Nuclear Sciences and Physical Engineering (FNSPE), Czech Technical University in Prague, are conducted in accordance with Act No. 111/1998 Coll., the Principles of Doctoral Studies, the Study and Examination Regulations for Doctoral Study Programs at CTU in Prague, and faculty guidelines.
Applicants to doctoral programmes must hold a Master’s degree in the same or a related field (i.e., the title Mgr. or Ing.). Admission decisions are made by the Dean of the Faculty based on the results of the entrance procedure. Neither prior professional experience nor an age limit is required. Students in the final year of their Master’s programme may also apply; in such cases, admission is conditional upon successful completion of the degree. Doctoral programmes are open to Czech citizens, foreign nationals, and stateless persons legally residing in the Czech Republic. A candidate officially becomes a doctoral student of CTU in Prague once admitted to the program.
The aim of doctoral studies is to prepare graduates for independent research and creative scientific work. The program is completed by passing the state doctoral examination and defending a dissertation. Graduates are awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). The higher qualification, including advanced language skills, significantly enhances graduates’ career prospects.
Financial Support for Doctoral Studies
Financial support for full-time doctoral students is provided for the standard duration of study (i.e., four years) by the so-called Doctoral Study Income, which students can apply for (the conditions under which they are eligible and forms can be found here).
Doctoral study income is derived from the minimum wage and amounts to CZK 24,960 for the 2025/2026 academic year. It consists either of a scholarship alone or a combination of a scholarship and 2/3 of the gross salary (for creative work related to the preparation of a dissertation) from CTU or an external training organization.
It is also possible to obtain a so-called special-purpose scholarship for excellent academic results and for participation in the research and teaching activities of the supervising department.
Accommodation for full-time doctoral students from outside Prague is available in university dormitories, and meals can be taken in university canteens. The academic year includes six weeks of vacation.
